International Men’s Health

‍ ‍

1 June 2025

In June we celebrate International Men’s Health week on the 9-15 June.

It is an opportunity to highlight the importance of men's health, and to promote and support the health and wellbeing of men and boys in our communities.

Men's Health Week focuses on not just physical health, but also men's mental health and emotional wellbeing.

In Australia, 50 men die per day due to preventable causes. One of the aims of Men’s Health Week is to raise awareness about men taking regular health checks to reduce the risk of developing certain health conditions, reducing the risk of disability due to chronic health conditions and reducing the risk of premature death.

There are seven areas of health and wellbeing that men of all ages could be proactive in checking regularly to ensure problems are caught early and timely action can be taken to manage or improve it.

  1. Know your numbers: your Body Mass Index (BMI), your Blood Pressure, Your Cholesterol and Your Blood sugar level

  2. Check your senses: Annual Vision and Hearing test

  3. Check Down Under:  Prostate Health and Reproductive Organs checks

  4. Check for Cancer: Bowel cancer screening and prostate cancer screening (PSA blood test) from age 50, skin checks at any age

  5. Heart Health Check – from age 45 or earlier if you have pre-existing heart conditions or family history of heart diseases

  6. Check your Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing – at any age – seeking Mental Health assessment and support if you feel flat, anxious and hopeless for more than 2 weeks, or if you are facing a life crisis or major life transition and not coping. Check that you have a self-care plan to relax and rejuvenate, something you enjoy doing on a regular basis.

  7. Check your habits – Discuss with your health care professional about your lifestyle habits including diet, exercise, sleep, smoking and alcohol intake or any other unhealthy habits you might have, and develop an action plan to improve these habits.
